Chapter Twenty
I was woken abruptly by the sound of someone hammering and shouting outside.
âKat!â yelled Piers. âOpen the damn door!â
I lay there, furious. It wasnât even half past seven!
âKat! Iâll break this door down if you donât open up right now.â
Still I lay there motionless, but then â to my dismay â I heard the jangle of keys and a click as the front door opened. Iâd forgotten about the spare key under the plant pot.
I leapt out of bed, dragging on a towelling robe, and paused at the top of the spiral staircase. âHave you any idea what time it is?â
Piers stopped at the bottom of the steps as I glowered down. âKat â please!â
Stubble covered his chin and his hair stuck up on end. I noticed that apart from a Barbour jacket, he was wearing the same clothes as heâd worn yesterday, which seemed unsuitable for such a wet and windy morning. But it was the look of sheer despair that made my anger vanish.
I hurried downstairs.
âWhatâs wrong? Whatâs happened?â
âWhy didnât you answer the phone last night?â he demanded. âNo, donât tell me. I suppose he was here.â
âWho?â
âPaddington â but it doesnât matter. I donât care.â He seemed distraught.
âWhatâs going on?â
âFather is missing.â
I swear my heart stopped beating. Had my mother met up with Aubrey after all? I was in a dilemma. She had specifically told me she wanted their relationship kept a secret.
âHow do you know?â
âBecause his horse came home without him on it.â
âHe came off?â
âFather is one of the best horsemen in the country. He wouldnât just come off.â
âIâm sure heâs probably walking home right now.â
âNo, you donât understand.â An expression of such agony crossed Piersâs face that for a moment I pushed aside my confused feelings for him and my jealousy of Cassandra.
âWhat do you mean?â
âThis was yesterday!â he exclaimed. âNot this morning.â
âYou mean late last night?â
âWhy would you say late last night?â Piers said sharply. âDo you know something?â
âI just assumed that ⦠I assumed that since he was at the BearFest, he must have ridden later in the day.â
âYes, yes!â Piers cried. âI know all that.â
âHave you lookedââ
âWhat do you think Iâve been doing?â he snapped. âIâve been combing the country lanes for hours. I didnât realise that something was wrong until I went to check on the horses.â He raked his fingers through his hair, making it stick up even more. âI always check on the horses before I go to bed. Cromwellâs door was wide open. He was inside and still fully tacked up.â
âOh. I see.â
âOne of the stirrup leathers was missing â¦â
âOh, I see,â I said again as the full meaning of a missing stirrup leather began to sink in. It was little wonder that Piers was concerned. If Aubreyâs foot had caught in the stirrup iron and the safety catch on the stirrup bar had accidentally been closed or jammed, he could have been dragged until his body weight inevitably forced the safety catch to open. The thought was horrific.
